FOUNDING MEMBERS

Meeko who is now a 2-year-old German Shepherd dog, had suffered with severe reactivity and aggression issues towards other dogs, cats, motorbikes, cyclists, and the list goes on.

Kay was struggling to walk 1-year-old Meeko and was scared at every turn, that there would be something that would set Meeko off.

Kay was trying her absolute best, but Meeko’s reactivity was only getting worse and worse.

However, being determined and persevering to find a training system that suited both of their needs, Kay gave us a call. After an Initial Consult which included a full behavioural assessment, we were quite sure we had Meeko sussed out.

Applying one of tailored Behavioural Modification Programs where we worked on engagement, obedience, foundation skills and consequence Meeko was learning how to make great behavioural decisions and how to look to Kay for direction.

We taught Kay how to become a great leader and advocate for Meeko, learning to say ‘no’ and set her expectations. Now, 12 months on, Kay and Meeko are still turning up every week to our group classes and we love seeing them and their achievements every time.

What a beautiful pair these two make. Liz is such a lovely, caring and friendly person and we could instantly tell it had rubbed off on her 2 yo 40kg Rottweiler Chilli. Unless you’re walking in to her backyard Chilli just wants to play, say hello and be the best of friends with every man, woman and dog. Unfortunately, this is also what got them in to trouble! Chilli had such high value in other people and animals that unfortunately one day she ran across the road to see one her ‘friends’ and she forgot all about Liz who was attached to the other end of the leash. Liz literally got dragged across a road and ended up with scrapes, scratches, a busted nose and broken ribs. When making Liz and Chilli’s program we made sure it consisted of a lot of engagement work, obedience and learning that the most important relationship for both of them was with who on the other end of the leash.

Sandra first contacted us when she purchased a brand-new Maltese puppy. This was the first dog she had ever owned and wanted to set Maisy up on the path to success and a great future. With all puppies it is critically important to remember that when it comes to exposure it’s quality, not quantity. We allowed Maisy to explore as openly as possible while also making sure she wasn’t going to get hurt. It’s OK for our pups to be a little bit nervous about new sounds and surfaces but we need to allow them to work it out for themselves, so they learn how to deal with and work through pressure and stress from the start. We love that we are still in contact with Sandra and can help her through any little hurdles that may arise. We often say that once you’ve hired us, you’ve got us for life. We will always be available to help.

THEY JUST LOST IT FOR A WHILE

For some dog owners they feel that this is as good as it gets. That they’ve tried so many options, they’ve sought assistance and advice and still they’re lost. This is Glenda’s story. Glenda and her rescue dog Rosie were happy and settled at home. Thinking she had dealt with Rosie’s anxiety issues Glenda decided it was time to add another rescue to her family, enter Harley. Harley brought with him a whirlwind of vibrance and energy as all young dogs do. Unfortunately, when out on walks Harley would lunge, pull and bark, and this in turn re activated Rosie’s anxiety and she also began to act out on walks and at home. As Rosie would begin to anxiously wine and pull on the lead Harley could not keep his emotions in check, and he had started to re direct (bite) on to Rosie and a fight would ensue. Not a pleasant walk for anyone. Now with the proper guidance, structure and accountability both dogs are making great decisions and walks and home life have returned to a happy event.

This sweet ball of energy is Lab x Kelpie mix Chico. Two super intelligent breeds bred together can sometimes mean a heap of frustrating high intensity issues. Chico’s family also consists of 3 young energy filled boys and Chico was finding it very hard to make smart decisions when it came to interacting with the kids and when out on walks. Chico had also started showing signs of resource guarding and food aggression towards her human family and doggy brother Bam. Telly has done an amazing job at training Chico and with lots of foundation skills, structure, the correct genetic outlet and by teaching Chico to slow her brain down when in high intensity situations she is now able to make great behavioural decisions, whether it be when playing with the kids in the backyard, when out on walks with Bam or when food is involved.

Beth contacted us here at Mackay K9 to help with her beautiful Weimaraner Meeko. Meeko already had lovely obedience skills but was starting to show signs of reactivity that was escalating very quickly when out walking. Beth and her partner had also just purchased a new puppy so didn’t want any of Meeko bad habits to rub off on the new one. We went back to basics with lots of engagement and foundation work. Reminding Meeko that he knew how to handle these different situations and how to behave accordingly. Now Beth can enjoy walking with both dogs, and with lots to great behaviour and obedience skills such as recall both dogs are able to have off lead time at the park.
